To me is all, I to myself am lost,
Who the immortals' fav'rite erst was thought;
They, tempting, sent Pandoras to my cost,
So rich in wealth, with danger far more fraught;
They urged me to those lips, with rapture crown'd,
Deserted me, and hurl'd me to the ground.

There are 2 kinds of men in this world...

Those of the triangle who prefers to wear briefs.

And those of the square who prefers to wear boxers.

OK, to be honest, there's also a third kind of guy who prefers to wear nothing, i.e. commando style. Nothing wrong with that really. I think there's a good 12-15% of us out there. We are pretty adept with our "hardware" so as not to get caught in the zipper when nature calls. We invest in button-fly's. Lol.

Anyway, back to the triangles and squares... for me it has always been simple. I wear what's comfortable and that's usually a square or nothing depending on the situation. But every now and then due to the situation I do wear the triangle..for example, I'd wear briefs as opposed to boxers for badminton sessions. Can't possibly be executing a fade-away jumping smash if my hardware's jingling like Christmas bells. Lol.

Sorry, that could've been too much information. :p

Anyway, I bought a pair of hanro!!! on impulse while gallivanting in prime outlets today. $$$$$$$$!

State of the Union!

| Friday, January 29, 2010
Explore..
So, I watched the State of the Union address in its entirety, this being the first one of my adulthood that I could stand to listen to and look at without getting angry!! I'll keep this highly biased, flag-waving post with my first State of the Blog. It is shorter than the President's.

Ladies and gentlemen:
I have always supported Obama for various reasons. I think he is a brilliant speaker. And last night's speech is a testimony, his speech should be a model for presidents to follow: be informal and colloquial, come out swinging, don't be afraid to ad-lib, point out your successes, point out the other side's failures, and lay out a specific, short-term agenda. However I was not in agreement to a few things one of which as follows;

"To make college more affordable, this bill will finally end the unwarranted taxpayer subsidies that go to banks for student loans. Instead, let’s take that money and give families a $10,000 tax credit for four years of college and increase Pell Grants.

And let’s tell another 1 million students that, when they graduate, they will be required to pay only 10 percent of their income on student loans, and all of their debt will be forgiven after 20 years, and forgiven after 10 years if they choose a career in public service, because in the United States of America, no one should go broke because they chose to go to college."

OK, let’s take away any incentive for banks to give student loans. That makes complete sense only if you want to ensure that government is the only place where you can get one (hint, hint). But what floored me the most was that if you take a student loan, you don’t have to pay back more than 10% of your income. Suppose I get my degree in social work and work primarily pro bono for the first ten years, then become a politician! FREE EDUCATION!!!!! Your debt will be forgiven? Really? We will tell banks that if they make a loan, they get no perks from government, and on top of it, after a certain period of time, the students will not be required to pay the bank back! BRILLIANT. Talk about a socialist sentiment.
Anyway, I believe Obama has real integrity. For one thing, he has been triying to run a decent presidency. Some tactics that could be considered underhanded are probably impossible to avoid, but I really believe he is committed to the mush needed change.
Thank you!

$$Seriously$$

When Apple’s legal team moves on from ‘devices’ to ‘concepts,’ will names like Podcheck, Podshow, and PodSquad be next? Yeah, there’s an app for (just about) everything. But seriously apple, this is the best you could do? Apple is just trying to bank off of the app store with this product, when it should be putting a true tablet PC (or should I say, iTablet) on the market. All they had to do was take the macbook air, flip the screen around, use the touch-sensitive glass technology, and superglue it back onto the hardware. Voila! Tablet mac with no camera!!!

When I went to the bathroom at five thirty to pee, the door was closed. So I went to the toilet downstairs, and then came back up to fumble around for my gym suite and the winter coat from the other room. My bro was still in the bathroom, hyperventilating, groaning. Then he sort of howled. He came out after being in there maybe half an hour total. It is very unusual from my brother to be up so early in the morning. I later came to know that he had a class in Olney and so had to leave early.

Well, anyway I took my car keys and left as I was running late myself to the gym. I walked out the door alone with nothing but my absurd good health, to run a 30 minute tempo run. Tempo run of 30 minutes would begin with the first 0-10 minute easy running, build to 10-25 minutes near the middle, then 25-30 minutes easy toward the end. After my temp run I sat down for my morning meditation, a new gig that I have started today.. Somehow, I have to fit this huge thing of teaching my self to sit tranquil into my morning routine… I can see it to be a challenge! lol

I came back from the gym around six fourty five to find the TV screaming “The great debate: Michelle Obama doesn’t wear Panty hose, but lots of women still do” After turning off the TV that my brother left on!! I took my dogs out to walk, to a windy rainy(not good) morning!!! and by the time I hit the shower it was 7:30. I rushed to get the cooked noodles from last night into a container for my lunch today. Treated my dogs to their daily chew and left them in the house (It's a "Leaving Las Vegas" sort of feeling) to: play with their ball, take a nap, play catch up down the stairs for a while, then another nap, play detective; sniffing around, take a nap, play with each other, chew on things that should not be chewed, then another nap and laze around or play together before taking the final nap before my arrival back from work.

On my way to work, I have found the new hobby of listening to Chennai FM (TAMIL RADIO!!!!) YAY! This morning it was Keeranjani and Poornima MC-ing. It was a program where listeners called in to play rhyming words game. The winner gets to choose a song of their choice. It was quite a fun filled game! I learned a few funny- rhyming Tamil words! I love listening to the radio as I grew up listening to radio in the morning. When I used to be in Singapore my mother used to switch on the radio early in the morning around 5:30 AM. As a matter of fact, some times the radio is on 24/7. My morning activities go in parallel with the radio tunes till I take the bus to school around 7:55 AM. Oh God! I miss those days.

My college days in France were busy and I was not too much into listening to radio in the morning and if at all I do, I listen only during late nights, when I’m copying journals (did I say copying ;-)) By then RTL was "HOT" and was real entertainer for us when we all friends used to get together at one place to finish up the last minute assignments ;-))

A charcoal engine of memories, though it makes me sad, somehow it puts a smile on my face. Wanting to get back to the past, I realize it makes me the better person today thus bringing me the smile. Anyway at this juncture I would suggest a pause for relaxation. I grant you a few minutes to recharge your batteries; Listen -

recharged? now get back to your work!

As I read my memoires; I realized, it was not about the frequency or the length of your visits/stays/encounters but the fact that pleases, yours made me very happy. It brought you so near that I could feel the thrills go through me as when we sat together on the last row of seat some 16 months ago. After my stressful days/nights, that evening with you next to me meant simply worlds to me, and I find myself reverting to it and living again the pleasure of it, time and time again. It is one of the nights that stand out even from other happy nights. Then, I did not know how mush I wanted you, how I wanted to hold you close to me and cover you with my love and kisses, and how much your love meant to me.

I know that some things were never expressed; but it wasn't needed! We shared our PAST,PRESENT AND FUTURE then! Though we knew it was not going to last we never accepted it, maybe because we knew of this day. You took your path and I took mine separated by many social norms and driven into bloody strains yet this day we cross again, still unsure? Worry not for you are my dearest. I only have this to say; Live in positive hope and treat every new person/date/relationship as it's own entity, on it's own merit, not clouded by previous beliefs or scars. Everything is well!

So, I finally watched 3 Idiots after some heavy persuasion from you know who ;) I have to admit the movie had few neat gags that triggered mon memoires ;) and was quite funny. But I also did not appreciate the ridicules made. I would have been fine if it was done in a manor to address some beneficial changes to the Indian education system and some other cultural behaviors. But I felt it failed to do that. And when did a movie intending to talk about much needed social changes made it right to fit a “commercial hero” to do that job!!! Please make up your mind; you either make a “hero” movie or a classic” “scripted” movie

Music, sweet, sweet music. From Bob Marley to Michael Jackson, from MSV to Illayaraja, from Billie Holiday to Billy Bragg, from Bob Dylan to Elvis Presley, from Chuck Berry to Chuck D, from John Lennon to John Prine, and, yes, even from Deva to Vidhyasagar, music makes the world go round. From Blind Willie Johnson to Robert Johnson, from R. D. Burman to Anu Malik, from Roger Waters to Muddy Waters, from Laxmikant Pyarelal to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, from Hank Williams to Lucinda Williams, and from Neil Young to Angus Young, music makes a bad day better and a good day perfect. From The Stones to Stevie, from Kurt to Kanye, from Aretha to Al, from Joni to Jimi, from Otis to OutKast, from Marvin to Miles, from Yuvan to GV, from Marie Laforet to Lara Fabian and from Cash to Slash, music simply inspires.

Yes, it's true; music has most definitely been one of the great passions of my life. But then you do have these moments of being cheated. A R Rahman's Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa is one such trap of betrayal. Anyways - this folks, is my humble (not) opinion. Over and Out! .. as I hit the repeat on Goa :)

Alright, an exaggeration, but I am both very proud and flattered to have been invited by the Sri Lankan Embassy of US to speak at their Pongal celebration – the festival of harvest and spring. This celebration is basically a big get together for dignitaries, consulates, business entrepreneurs AND also anyone who has a vested interest in Sri Lanka to network, share ideas and generally to have a good meal (yup food is obviously involved).

The event took place yesterday 17th Jan 2010 at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC. I was asked to do a presentation speech and I just want to share with you guys a little sneak sneak of my day..

Oh, Did I mention I felt so bloody nervous at first. We had a huge list of VIPs, including Tissa Wijeratne-Deputy Chief of Missions, Brigadier Vijitha Ravipriya-Deffense Attache, Dr. Walter Anderson-VP,John Hopkins University and Steve Kerchoff-Representative from the White House. When I was invited to give this speech, I was asked if I could give a simple short talk about the significance of Pongal. No pressure there. Here is the speech;

"Ainthu karathanai aanai mugathanai
Inthin ilam pirai polun yeyitranai
Nandhi magan thanai
Nyana kolunthinai punthiyil
Vaitu adi potrugindreney"

translates -

"We emplace in our minds
The sacred feet of the ONE
The embodiment of wisdom
The five handed
Elephant Visaged- with tusks
Curved like the crescent moon
The son of the Supreme Siva
We adore"

"Ingu koodiyirukum annaivarukum enn panivana vanakam koodiya, pongal nal vaazhthukkalai Koorikondu…

I would like to continue my speech in English for the convenience of everybody in the audience.

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would first like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you who have gathered here today to celebrate Thai Pongal. Thank you!

Thai Pongal; a cultural holiday recognized and celebrated by the Tamil communities of Sri Lanka has been around for more than 2000 years. Historically Pongal is a day to celebrate the harvesting season in Sri Lanka and India. It is the day to thank the sun, earth, rain, farmers and farming animals for the yearlong hard work. This two-day festival of nature-worship and thanksgiving takes its name from the Tamil word “pongal” meaning, "boiled rice" and is held on the first day of the Tamil month “Thai” hence the name thai-pongal. During this month, farmers harvest rice, sugar cane and other grains. Pongal is a joyous and happy occasion celebrated by everyone despite social class and faith.

On the day of Pongal, members of the family wake up early in the morning, bathe, puts on new clothes and gather to cook the traditional Pongal which refers to newly harvested rice cooked in new pot with milk and sweetened with jaggery in the direct view of sunlight. Then the cooked pongal is offered to the sun with special prayers by an elder of the family, as if to say thank you. On the next day, Mattu Pongal is celebrated to thank the cattle’s, which helped farmers to plough the fields, transport goods and provide milk to drink. On this day the cattle is bathed, decorated and fed with cooked Pongal.

In current times I believe Pongal is the day to remember our origins and thank our forefathers for teaching us to appreciate nature, cultural values and religious tolerance that they have bestowed upon us for a harmonious and prosperous society. On this festive day, we should banish superstitious beliefs, darkness of ignorance and egoistic arrogance. And instead lit the light of knowledge and embrace the warmth of human love and compassion among all people. Let us cheer pongalo Pongal and cultivate friendly attitude to conquer the minds of men and women; to show empathy; to give up war; give up jealousy; to shower mother Lanka and her people with mercy and love! Let us all live with discipline; charity and harmony for a happy and prosperous life! Pongaloooo pongal!!! Thank you!"

I was elated to get all positive feedbacks out of some 65 people who attended. Some words that were used to describe my speech, outstanding, smooth, beautiful, direct, naked, taut, honest, passionate, lean, shivering, startling, and graceful. What more should I ask for?? I am indeed very thrilled.

Quote of the moment: “It's not because of stability that someone wants to marry, but because of lack of stability.”

I just finished watching Then She Found Me, a film that meanders along ... but Helen Hunt, director of the movie does a good job with a somewhat muddled script. There are several really poignant moments where you can identify with her bewilderment, self-doubt, anxiety, depression, desperation, and, at times, a wistful persistent hope in spite of all of the above. Her face is really the star of the film. There are a few moments of brilliant direction and lighting, too. Great closeups. On the other hand, there are a few scenes that seemed pointless to me. If they further illuminated our characters or advanced the storyline, well, I missed it. Quelques pas dans la vie!

Ruth said she is very good at intuiting people she meets after a few conversations; she says; "Jegan, you express love only sometimes and when you do, you don’t do it literally." To many it may sound accurate; and I have to partially agree, I do feel that my love for you need not be expressed for it should and would be felt. A contradicting statement to many; how can love be felt if it is not expressed?? It is like the love between a newborn and its mother. No expression is needed but the bond is there, it is felt! I have always adored this unspoken bond between one another that just shows how much they care for each other. I do believe that life is not always full of multiple choices or the yes-or-no questions, but application questions; every application needs a different treatment, answer. Anyway Ruth continued; “I am frustrated at things because I feel that they have not met my expectations.” I do agree, but my expectations are minimum; I expect open communication, and if I cant even get that then you bet I am going to a bad child! Go here: Anyway I cannot stand being still, I need to be occupied with someone, something, tomorrow will always be a question so let us cherish today and be open about anything and everything. Make today the happiest day of our lives! But again you do have "them" who spin me. They spin me round and round. Stop spinning me! And this heart of “them” is a glass holding water. It is full but seems to have nothing inside. I have only one thing to say to “them” Don't lie but if you do; please don't comfort because each sewing has to meet stinging pain..

I don't know if it as sad as many think it is but all the rumors and speculation about Sam Raimi not liking the script for Spider-Man 4, and his needing to push the prime summer blockbuster release date, the house of cards has finally fallen: Spider-Man 4 has been shut down by Sony.

Though director Raimi is gone, Tobey Maguire is no longer Spider-Man, the entire Spider-Man franchise is getting rebooted. Mike Fleming of Deadline Hollywood broke the news/story??

Anyway Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012!! YAY!!!

"Truth hurts"

First let me clarify that I love "them" no matter what differences we may have!

I’m not 100% sure that I want to rock this boat at the moment, but I’m getting a little perturbed by the comments on the condition of my friend Shadab. I wanted to discuss/share what I came to know and that was it. That idea, to my knowledge was quite peaceful until a “Truth Hurts” showed up and decided to say that some will always be inferior to "them" when it comes to their friendship with Shadab and that there will be some things that I just can’t do. I rolled my eyes and blew it off as silly chauvinism at first, but they persisted in arguing with me. It got ridiculous if you ask me. I kindly called for a truce, figuring that we were just going to have to agree to disagree.

I am not here to argue who is a better friend - that is not an issue. And moreover I do full heartedly accept (the truth) "them" to be a more close friend. It is just that I am not seeking to be more or less but just enough for me to do what I would like to do in order for the situation to be better. And I know that they also care, if not more than me for Shadab's speedy full recovery. We are built differently and for different purposes. I believe/want my purpose is to be in bring harmony. I am very grateful to "them" for introducing me to some wonderful souls like "them" selves. For which I am ever grateful!

The truth hurts only because we humans are known to dream/hope a little too much and have our own ideas of how we think things "ought" to be that don't always coincide with reality. Break away and you will be seeking the truth and truth only!!

Truth (impartial truth) is a concept we abstract from personal experience with true-false propositions. IMO the ability to discern truth from falsehood is not a mere introspective feeling. To be true it must be something that can be observed, charted, and tested.

Impartial Truth = an intellectual, relational, unified, reliable, universal aspect of reality that we humans can discern in a limited but useful manner.

Useful means that we humans can learn bits of impartial truth, apply aspects of impartial truth to our lives, and work toward making improvements. These improvements are not absolute because human knowledge of the totality of truth is always limited. If we can break away from the confines of our own conceit, we develop a hunger to learn. When we reach this stage, each truth we learn feeds our appetite for more. In this manner we learn truths and continue to seek truth at the same time.

It's my position that if you have an open mind you will continue to learn truth and seek truth throughout your entire life. But if you have closed your mind and embraced a belief system claiming to possess the one and only one truth then you will be begin to display egocentric righteousness (the natural tendency to feel superior in the light of our confidence that we are in the possession of the truth ).

More Truth
The truth is that many of us do not wish to listen to people who think they are in possession of the only truth. And when we speak our truth to those who are determined to share their belief system with us regardless of our obvious rejection, they become hurt because they are operating from a base of egocentricity, evidenced by the following tendencies taken from the book "The Human Mind" by Dr. Linda Elder:

The human mind is naturally prone to be following egocentric tendencies; e.g

egocentric memory (the natural tendency to "forget" evidence and information which does not support our thinking and to "remember" evidence and information which does)

egocentric myopia (the natural tendency to think absolutistically within an overly narrow point of view)

egocentric infallibility (the natural tendency to think that our beliefs are true because we believe them)

egocentric righteousness (the natural tendency to feel superior in the light of our confidence that we are in the possession of THE TRUTH)

egocentric hypocrisy (the natural tendency to ignore flagrant inconsistencies between what we profess to believe and the actual beliefs our behavior imply, or inconsistencies between the standards to which we hold ourselves and those to which we expect others to adhere)

egocentric oversimplification (the natural tendency to ignore real and important complexities in the world in favor of simplistic notions when consideration of those complexities would require us to modify our beliefs or values)

egocentric blindness (the natural tendency not to notice facts or evidence which contradict our favored beliefs or values)

egocentric immediacy (the natural tendency to over-generalize immediate feelings and experiences--so that when one event in our life is highly favorable or unfavorable, all of life seems favorable or unfavorable as well)

egocentric absurdity (the natural tendency to fail to notice thinking which has "absurd" consequences, when noticing them would force us to rethink our position)

Grandpa

Today I got to hear that my grandfather passed away. He almost made it to the age of 86, a very respectable person. I last saw him on his 80th Birthday, it has been a while.. there is an inherent biological relationship but the emotional bonding between grandfather and grandchild comes only with effort.

Unfortunately for me I have somehow lost the emotional bond. As I sit back and recall my early childhood and teen days; I was very close to him and my Grandma. He used to sing with me and my sis, tell us stories and we had great times together. In recent times my Grandpa was suffering and when he decided to let go and follow peace, I found much happiness for him. Sorrow for my father but how could I be so selfish.

My Grandpa was a rich man in many ways, but poor in the ways of family. He was always busy in his profession that he had less time for his family and kids. Though at later times he did spend quality time with me and my siblings, it was a rare situation.

I hope that wherever my Grandfather is, that he doesn't carry any more pain and that he's really happy and free of the contempt he carried around all his life.

I don't know how you feel,
I cant say I understand,
'cause I don't.
I'm sorry for this my dear,
why did it have to come upon
such a beautiful person like you?
We might not understand gods ways.
But we also know he does take the best,
'cause he needs more angels to watch over us.
You may be sad and feel depressed,
but please know that I love you.
And I wanna deal with this situation with you.
If you feel like you have no one,
I will be here for you no matter what.
I won't know what to say to make you feel better,
'cause I know I cant take away the pain you will be feeling.
But I will be here to comfort you.
take all the time you need I'll be right beside you.

dedicated to Muskaan.

I am Sorry!
