Breathe; a deep breath this time... The rain is coming down, every tree branch, every plant leaf a slalom course for water drops racing each the other to the dry land. The gray sky has no composition, but both bright and dark to the eye. As though hinting to ME; get grounded and remember the taste of your intentions for your life. Remember the tang or the sour-sweetness… the rich chocolaty flavor… whatever your dreams and desires taste like… remember that.

Now, observe your first breadcrumb on the path ahead of you. You may look at some and instantly know - my breadcrumbs have a flaky light brown crust - not hard and dark. And you can readily dismiss it. Next crumb, it might take as little as a sniff for you to know FOR SURE… this isn’t how mine smelled. And you turn to the next. This one looks right, smells a little more familiar, but now, you have to take a taste. You might have a slew of crumbs that look right and smell right — and you might have to compare. None of them may be spot on - and if not, pick the one that is the closest. Then you proceed to the next crumbs placed before you, and then again. Follow those sensations that you memorized… the taste, smell and feel you recognize instantly as your path.

Sounds a little daunting in terms of getting that bridge built and getting from here to there, doesn’t it? But that’s only as you first start out. The breadcrumbs will thin. The paths will become more obvious. It will happen - as long as you set out. If you sit down for a time, it will take longer. That’s not always a bad thing. Sometimes we need rest. For others, there is a sense of urgency and they’ve strapped on their traveling packs and are setting out to find out. Some it will take what may be or seem like lifetimes to follow their breadcrumbs, and for others, it may take only what appears to be a day. It’s all good. It’s your journey. Seriously, it’s all good.

Devil, directed by John Erick Dowdle and written by Brian Nelson has Shyamalan's fingerprints stain on every frame. Do not see the boringly STUPID movie.

Pleasure in time..

It is half past 3 Wednesday morning and here I am sitting to blog!!! You must think I am crazy, maybe you are right. I am crazy, crazy about having pleasures when I want to and how I want to. Well, I woke up to a dream, in which I am swimming in a lake and listening to the birds chirp. In the backdrop I am also hearing a soothing voice calling my name.. I am not able to see who it is due to the glowing radiance from the reflection of the sun in the water. I wipe and rub my eyes in an attempt to get a better view but alas! I wake up.. I could not go back to bed so I decided to listen to some music to ease me into bed. But it seems music had bestowed me with inspirations to write and share its joy.

Have you seen the connection between photography and music?? Well, I think I see it like this; a photograph is a record of a moment captured, frozen in time. But exactly how long is ‘a moment’? When you take a photo, the camera’s shutter opens for a fraction of a second to expose the film (or the digital cell) inside. Usually this fraction will be somewhere between 1/250 and 1/60 of a second – and generally speaking, the smaller the aperture of your shutter, the longer you you need to expose the film. Using a pinhole camera it’s possible to keep the shutter open for longer than a second without over-exposing the picture. Much, much longer in some cases.

In a very similar way, music is a record of a moment expressed. Contradicting many I believe music is also frozen in time, though it is much more rejoiced over and over again it is about that past moment. Time’s passing is apparent to all of us: We measure it constantly; we see ourselves age, we suffer loss and celebrate renewal, we remember and predict. Yet physicists labor over a definition. Is time a fundamental property of the universe? Or is it just a by-product of the interaction of more basic laws? Does it even exist? Thanks to the limitless possibilities of music & photography, composers bend and stretch time into sculptures for us to contemplate. As these forms of art is passed down and continues to be created all over the world, it becomes apparent what a rich and resilient material time is, and how much there is to say about its incorporeal flow.

Emotional responses to what I see, hear, play even. A deep sense of connection. The child-like experience is back, that sense of utter amazement of “wow” with what I hear and see. Here I share a few hope you can connect too :)

If you’re lost you can look..and you will find me

Time after time

If you fall I will catch you..I’ll be waiting

Time after time

Unkii ulfat kaa yaqiin ho..

Why, when we speak of love, do we most often refer to a feeling or personal pleasure or a circumstance that makes us happy? I am not going to try and answer that today but I do want to confess my love affair with music and devotion to a singer with which I could immediately and directly relate, Swarnalatha! She had the most soulful yet stylish voice. She had a subtle pathos in her voice with songs like Porale and Oru Naal. Who can forget her emotional struggle expressing pained love in her humming of Sunta Hai? Or the lusty and flirtatious humming of Hai Rama? It is a pity that she had to die so soon so young..I will remember swarnalatha for my whole life just for this part...

"Kannil oru vali irunthal kanuvugal varuvathillai..."

Watch this space for some of her gems which I will be posting soooooon :)

Butterflies Are Free

Although there are a couple exterior and location shots most of it takes place in the same setting, the main characters apartment. But. nevertheless it works wonders for the film as it showcases the acting talent of the cast and the technical talent of the crew.

The story is of a young blind man's quest to taste independence, especially from his mother and his encounters in doing so. It is a gentler tale of truth, freedom, the generation gap and young love. Though this outline of the movie is very typical of its time, Butterflies Are Free is special as its main character aka the hero is blind. It is quite a interesting perspective, the movie records his exploration into the adult world of choices, emotions, sex (or love) and life itself. In the movie, his mother character who goes from being overprotective (naturally) to having to push her son from the nest. The different emotions portrayed by the character are wonderful and I/we (desi's) could/can (all) connect to her as an overprotective parent.

Butterflies Are Free a must watch for its brilliance in character development, screenplay, performance and because I say so!!

Raaja Paarvai; Okay, in my view the Tamil movie is a re incarnation of Butterflies are free. I think you have to give credit to Kamal Haasan for his brilliant adaptation. I am not saying this just because I am an ardent fan of his works but it speaks for itself. I demand you to watch both the movies before sitting in for an argument.. maybe discussion? ;)

The similarities are quite obvious when you see them both; Kamal is a blind musician; he seeks to be independent from his mother; his heroine is bold and outgoing. That is it. Everything else is Kamal's improvisation.

Me, a Father?

As people interact with me, I do not intend to hide my flaws. However, I hope that they will get something good from knowing me. Life too short to make enemies. Smile :)

But, Alas! Does anyone even recognize or use this emotion anymore? All day long at work, I am faced with differing requests and complaints, not only from customers but also from my employees, that someone else is responsible for their "failures". When will they realize that we all have a part to play. Take responsibility I said!!

Among many other things, I am trying to read this engrossing book "We Need To Talk About Kelvin" by Lionel Shiver. The writing is beautiful, poetic at times, and it is a book of letters, from a woman to her husband, trying to rediscover what went wrong, after their son goes to high school and kills 9 people one day.

She traces all the way back from when they first entertained the idea of children, to the fateful day Kelvin commits the shooting. Where did they go wrong? The writing is raw and harrowing, and Lionel has a real gift. What happens when a mother does not feel the motherly love when she holds her baby for the first time, and what happens when your child is evil in nature. Why is it that the mother always cops the blame? I am only halfway through the book and I am already questioning the judgment that we are quick to pass about parents.

So far, I have to admit that I am loving and savouring this book.. It is not difficult to empathize with the mother in the book, but let me reassure you that she is flawed, and she is real. The book paints the father as a doting parent, the perfect child loving adult with a blind spot. It really makes me appreciate the responsibility that parents take on.

One good example is how quickly we condemn the mother who leaves her child in the bathtub for 5 seconds to pick up the phone and comes back to discover that her child has drowned in two inches of water. Two inches. She could have been a great mother all this time, but we discount that. We only remember and judge her for the 5 seconds that she was away. As if to say that the loss of her child and her guilt is not enough to tie her down already.

The book also makes me wonder; does this responsibility towards our children blind us to the point of protection that we will blame anyone or everyone than our own child for something that they had committed. Are we teaching them the right thing by shielding them and reaffirming their perfection? When and how do we teach responsibility. Will this world be a better place to live if we all took some responsibility instead of trying to find excuses and place the blame on others? The real question is will I be the father painted in this book or the father I preach to be in my blog.. hmmm

Bears!!!

Ok, so I went hiking over the weekend and didn't encounter any bears. Maybe I’m an idiot (ok, keep your opinions to yourself, thank you...), but I’m disappointed that I didn't meet any bears in the woods. But then again I only went to Great Falls, VA!!!
A friend of mine told me that he had seen bears in the woods near where I went hiking, and that's kind of why I went hiking over the weekend. But I saw no bears :( But I did see some eagles and hawks…bugs.

But anyway it was lots of fun and tiring. My dogs loved it too :) They kept going and going.. guess they don’t get tired that easily. I especially like the fact that they don't really care if you're there or not. They kept going!! So you are left with no choice but to just keep going!! The trees, water fall and the animals.. what a sight full of serenity. It is funny but most of the things in the human world (car washes, malls, political parties, tv shows, etc) would disappear without human patronage and attention. But not the woods (and, well, nature) are seemingly disinterested in whether we're paying attention or not. And that's why the woods (and, well, nature) are so calming. I loved it!!

Picking it up..

Funk? Well, you know how you just feel like you are in a funk or a slump? Seriously, like you are in a rut that you can’t get out of? I have felt that way for the past few days. Hence, the lack of post. I just have felt like a hermit or a turtle wanting to hide in its shell and float away. It could be a full moon, the alignment of the planets, who knows. Hopefully it will pass soon. But I did want to post something...so.. and 'cause I did have a good time at my friends place this past weekend.

Last Saturday, I went over to visit Chandru and his baby girl Nikita. As you know I love photography and I love photographing newborn babies even more. So after taking some 50+ pics of Nikita I decided to give her some rest, She is a tiny little cuteee baby :) I will be posting some pics soon so watch out ;) That evening we, Chandru, bro and I decided to take a on a 4 mile run along the "famous" Rt.66. I must say it was quite a scene. Though I was exhausted much soon than expected, which I don't understand as I do run 4 miles every other day on the treadmill. Anyway it is always fun to run outside in the open with someone else.

Sunday after noon I decided to treat Chandru, his wife Usha, his Mom, my bro and most importantly myself to a good meal. Not that Usha's or Chandru's mom does not cook well I wanted it to be a treat from me. So, after driving to Fairfax to the Super H-Mart where I got some fresh veggies I took literally nothing more than 1hr and 15mins to cook a four dish lunch meal for five. I was quite impressed with the time. I thought my dishes were okay but everyone else loved it including my bro who is somewhat of a critic for the most part.. lol But either way I was happy, as I love to cook, especially for those I care. It gives me a good feel of accomplishment to make someone feel fulfilled. And as far as I know only food will make someone accept of being fulfilled anything and everything else we always want more.

Such fun filled happy moments reminded me… being in a slump doesn’t mean what your doing is wrong or off course… being in a slump means that you’ve done something that others haven’t done… YOU’VE STARTED! Traveling down the road less traveled will never be easy. Expect bumps in the road and even some moments of failure or miscalculated decisions along the way. Its all a part of the process! Its a part of the voyage…
