Reunion in Death!

Sneha stumble into her bedroom almost feebly, and look at the power and presence within her. It is a paradox — it seems that suddenly the darkness in her memory and the Faith in her intellect join forces and let her stand in the door way of Will. Faith beckons her to do rather than rest in darkness — to accomplish rather than question why.. as she slowly lifts the receiver to her ear.

It's cold. Her hand, poised over the keypad, hesitates. What is the number? She puts the phone on its hook and searches for the paper with Shreya's number on it. She knows the number. She memorized it yesterday, when she finally called information to get it. It took a while for the operator to find it.
Shreya moved since the last time Sneha spoke to her. Not surprising, it's been seventeen
years.

Seventeen years -- a lifetime ago. Certainly, nothing is the same. Most definitely not
Sneha. Seventeen years ago she was young and beautiful -- and in love. Hopelessly in
love. Now, married and two children later, she's just taking it one day at a time.

Biting her lip, Sneha perches on the end of the bed, her hand once again hovering over
the phone on the table in front of her. Ever since she heard that Shreya's son, Mathan, died
in a car accident, the same thoughts keep running through her mind. "Will Shreya even
remember me? We were best friends for ten years. How could she forget? The real
question is -- would she rather forget. Will she even talk to me? Has enough time lapsed
to heal the wounds? Has Shreya ever forgiven me?"

Looking back, Sneha could see that it was all blown out of proportion at the time. After
all nothing really ever happened. But Shreya never believed that. At least not that she ever
told Sneha.

It took a few months, after that blowout scene between them at the restaurant, for
Sneha to put the hurt behind her and move on. A year later, she got married and
regretted that Shreya was not there to be her bridesmaid. Shreya never knew she had a
namesake -- Sneha's first daughter, little Rani, who died at six months old, from SIDS.
"Thank God, for Latha. I thought the world ended when little Rani died. Latha is my pride
and joy, my reason for living, but little Rani is never far from my thoughts or my heart."

Now, Sneha's heard that Shreya has lost her son, too. Sneha's sister told her three days
ago. She read about it in the local paper last week. "Oh Shreya , I wish I were there for
you now. I want you to know that I know what you're going through. I want you to know
that you're not alone."

For the umpteenth time in three days, Sneha remembers the pain of losing a child.
Drying her eyes, her hands trembling, she picks up the phone and dials the number. A
sad, yet familiar voice answers on the third ring, "Hello."

"Hello, Shreya?"

Aruna gazed out over the Arabian Sea, feeling the faint breeze against her face - eyes shut, the white sand warm between her bare toes. The place was beautiful beyond belief, but it was still unable to ease the grief she felt as she remembered the last time she had been here.

She had married Ram right here on this spot three years ago to the day. Dressed in a simple, yet elegantly embroided purple saree, miniature red roses attempting to tame her long dark curls, Aruna had been happier than she had ever thought possible. Ram was even less traditional but utterly irresistible in creased cotton dhoti and a loose white cotton shirt. His dark hair slightly ruffled and his eyes full of adoration as his looked at his bride to be. The Vaishnav Guru read their vows as they held hands and laughed at the sheer joy of being young, in love and staying in a five star resort in Mumbai of India. They had seen the years blissfully stretching ahead of them, together forever. They planned their children, two she said, he said four so they compromised on three (two girls and a boy of course); where they would live, the traveling they would do together - it was all certain, so they had thought then.

But that seemed such a long time ago now. A lot can change in just a few years - a lot of heartache can change a person and drive a wedge through the strongest ties, break even the deepest love. Three years to the day and they had returned, though this time not for the unconventional beach side marriages but for one of its equally unpopular quickie divorces.

Aruna let out a sigh that was filled with pain and regret. What could she do but move on, find a new life and new dreams? - the old one was beyond repair. How could this beautiful place, with its lush green coastline, eternity of azure blue sea and endless sands be a place for the agony she felt now?

The man stood watching from the edge of the palm trees in the Sagar Upavan Park. He couldn't take his eyes of the dark-haired woman he saw standing at the water's edge, gazing out to sea as though she was waiting for something - or someone. She was beautiful, with her slim figure dressed in a loose flowing cotton dress, her crazy hair and eyes not far off the colour of the sea itself. It wasn't her looks that attracted him though; he came across many beautiful women in his work as a freelance photographer. It was her loneliness and intensity that lured him. Even at some distance he was aware that she was different from any other woman he could meet.

Aruna sensed the man approaching even before she turned around. She had been aware of him standing there staring at her and had felt strangely calm about being observed. She looked at him and felt the instant spark of connection she had only experienced once before. He walked slowly towards her and they held each other's gaze. It felt like meeting a long lost friend - not a stranger on a strange beach side park.

Later, sitting at one of the many restaurants in the city, sipping the local chai they began to talk. First pleasantries, their hotels, the quality of the food and friendliness of the locals. Their conversation was strangely hesitant considering the naturalness and confidence of their earlier meeting. Onlookers, however, would have detected the subtle flirtation as they mirrored each other's actions and spoke directly into each other's eyes. Only later, after the small talk had had its loosening effect, did the conversation deepen. They talked of why they were here and finally, against her judgement, Aruna opened up about her heartache of the past year and how events had led her back to the place where she had married the only man she believed she could ever love. She told him of things that had been locked deep inside her, able to tell no one. She told him how she had felt after she had lost her baby.

She was six months pregnant and the happiest she had ever been when the pains had started. She was staying with her mother as Ram was working out of town. He hadn't made it back in time. The doctor had said it was just one of those things, that they could try again. But how could she when she couldn't even look Ram in the eye. She hated him then, for not being there, for not hurting as much as her but most of all for looking so much like the tiny baby boy that she held for just three hours before the took him away. All through the following months she had withdrawn from her husband, family, friends. Not wanting to recover form the pain she felt - that would have been a betrayal of her son. At the funeral she had refused to stand next to her husband and the next day she had left him.

Looking up, Aruna could see her pain reflected in the man's eyes. For the first time in months she didn't feel alone, she felt the unbearable burden begin to lift from her, only a bit but it was a start. She began to believe that maybe she had a future after all and maybe it could be with this man, with his kind hazel eyes, wet with their shared tears.

They had come here to dissolve their marriage but maybe there was hope. Aruna stood up and took Ram by the hand and led him away from the restaurant towards the beech where they had made their vows to each other three years ago. Tomorrow she would cancel the divorce; tonight they would work on renewing their promises.

Love me Time!

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived:

Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others including Love.

One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all repaired their boats and left. Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to persevere until the last possible moment. When the island was almost sinking, Love decided to ask for help. Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, "Richness, can you take me with you?" Richness answered, "No, I can't.. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you." Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel, Vanity, please help me!" "I can't help you Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered. Sadness was close by so Love asked for help, "Sadness, let me go with you." "Oh...Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!" Happiness passed by Love too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her!

Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come Love, I will take you." It was an elder. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that he even forgot to ask the elder her name. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her way. Love, realizing how much he owed the elder, asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who helped me?" "It was Time," Knowledge answered. "Time?" asked Love, "But why did Time help me?" Knowledge smiled with deep Wisdom and answered,

"Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is."

Take Aim!

"tomorrow will always be a question so let us cherish today and be open about anything and everything. Make today the happiest day of our lives! "

The above quote from my previous post is a summary of today's post..so if you do not feel like reading it all then STOP. It pisses me off when many people complain that it is not an "ideal situation" in their life to attempt something... anything. Let me tell you two things. Firstly, you will never have "a lot of time" for even the most important preparation in your life. Secondly, and this is something that I strongly believe in, mainly because I have been burnt by it before. And that is - there is never an "ideal time" to do anything in your life. There never is. There is always an inconvenience, a complication, an unforeseen problem, a random change of plans. I personally had a million things like this. What this post is trying to do is to say that such things should not be looked upon as bad luck. But as evidence of your requirement to plan better and fight it out. To get the adrenalin flowing! Because fighting it out during an inconvenient time, is probably the only time when you will live life to the fullest.

Dronacharyar was taking his protégés along for a trip during their training phase. It is said that Dronacharya was the greatest teacher in Archery who ever lived and among those following him as a group of students was the great Arjunan, Duryodhanan, Ashwathaman, Nakulan, Yudhishtiran and the rest of the band. This is a story, which you may have heard before. It is a special story for me. This is my chance to say this story in my own words. So hear it again.

Dronacharyar stopped a few hundred yards away from a tree and called Ashwathaman by his side. He pointed to the far away tree and asked Ashwathama "Do you see the tree over there". And Ashwathaman says "yes". "Do you see a bird sitting on the branch of that tree", asks the revered teacher. Ashwathaman says “yes! I can see". Upon which Dronacharyar instructs Ashwathama to take his bow & arrow and take aim. He says "don't shoot! Just take aim".

Ashwathaman, who is chaffing at the reputation being second best archer in the world to Arjunan, takes out his bow and arrows and marks his target ( which quite far away) and he places his arrow on his bow and pulls the string towards him, ready to shoot. His rivalry with Arjunan is well documented and he wants to be known as the best archer who ever lived. Dronacharya now asks him, " what do you see Ashwathama?"

Ashwathama replies " I see the bird, its legs, the twigs on the branch in which the bird sits, the small mango behind the bird, the leaves surrounding the bird, a small worm on the branch that approaches the bird." The surrounding crowd is amazed. Bheeman could barely see the bird and nobody else had the eyesight to spot so many small details that Ashwathama so casually spotted. The fire burned inside Ashwathama to out beat his greatest rival and this fire allowed him to see what other could not. Dronacharyar does not seem impressed and tells him "Shoot! but you shall miss". Ashwathama, son of Dronacharyar, is insulted by the prediction of his own father and fires his arrow. He misses. He was given one shot and he missed. Dronacharyar would never give him another chance. He wouldn't want it either.

So Dronacharyar calls upon Arjunan, who as the books say is standing quietly behind the crowd watching the proceedings. "Arjuna, do you see the tree and the bird in it". Arjunan replies in affirmative. "Take aim then Arjuna, but do not fire your arrow until I say so".

So there stands Arjuna. And as great many writers have described before, he stands in a majestic posture with bow slightly tilted skywards, his powerful body arched as much as the bow. Observers seemed to feel the urge to see once more in order to distinguish between the man and the bow as they seemed to have merged into a single entity. So there stood Arjuna, on windy day like a statue, unmoved as Dronacharyar took the time to ask the question. "So, Arjuna what do you see?" Arjunan replied "I see the eye of the bird O' teacher". Dronacharyar smiled and asked once more “Do you see anything else?". Arjuna took his time and said “No! I don't. I don’t even see the feathers. I just see the eye of the bird".

Dronacharyar said “Shoot and you shall not miss". Legends never describes what happened after Arjuna shot the arrow. It is assumed that once he fires - the target is his. So Arjuna fired and that is the end of the story.

What got me thinking about this story? I always think about this story. There are small stories and big stories that move people. Such stories influence people and remains with them forever. This story among the millions of stories in the great epic Mahabharata is to emphasize the value of single minded focus and concentration in achieving success. Opportunities knock but once. From my experience during such moments you always have to see the eye of the bird, the core of your target before you take aim. It is the sighting that counts, the firing is almost incidental, a mere confirmation of the sighting. I have so many times noticed this as the key difference between success and failure. It is in the sighting.

Now in this computer age steeped in algorithmic approach to life, you may think "once I get the understanding on the importance of sighting. I should be able to crack the problem". But let me tell you friends. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Arjunan was given a difficult test but his story is under typical conditions. Silence, nothing else but the bird to focus on, and nothing but the wind to disturb you.

In life, when you are moving towards the most significant test of life, a test, which if you shall pass will not only make you great but will open the key to your dreams - may not be in such typical conditions. You just get one shot.. Imagine that shot in a James Bond movie. Now I am not comparing or contrasting Bond and Arjunan. I would never think of doing so. I am trying to find an example which a modern day youth can identify with. Bond is dangling on a cliff a rope (a thin slender rope) is tied to his left leg on one side and a tree on the other side. This is what stops Bond from falling down 10,000 feet. He is upside down, shaking in the air, it is biting cold with a lot of fog, the enemies are firing at him. His target is a mile away and moving. The vision is blurry. Bond then looks into his gun and finds that he just has one bullet left. He just gets one shot. He has to sight the eye of the target in that moment, fire and win.

Ladies and gentlemen! This is the typical modern day test to achieve your goals. This is real life. There will never be an ideal time to run towards an opportunity of a lifetime. There will never be an orchestrated test. This is not to belittle Arjunan's feat (he may have had other tests which was much harder than my favorite test which I quoted above) but just an explanation of tests the way I see it in the modern world. You just get one shot and if you fail, it's gone forever. You will only be left fighting for lesser trophies. The one shot separates people. During that one shot a person has to shut out all the other ambient noise and zone in on his target. That is the essence of a true warrior. There is and was only one Arjunan in times when many great warriors lived, so it is natural that in today’s age only a few will hit and many will miss. But it is the process of sighting gives valuable instructions on the irrevocable nature of life.

So do take aim and focus.. but only so when it is needed..

Take Aim!

I'm currently working on a short story that is almost complete.. but till then I wanted to share this written by a fellow student ;) So, till the next time I be back with an original short story/post of mine.. ENJOY THIS ONE...

He met her on a party, she was so outstanding, many guys were chasing after her,while he was so normal, nobody paid attention to him.

At the end of the party, he invited her to have coffee with him, she was surprised, but due to his politeness, she promised.

They sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything, she felt uncomfortable, she thought, please, let me go back home..

Suddenly he asked the waiter: ‘Would you please give me some salt? I’d like to put it in my coffee.’ Everybody stared at him, so strange! His face turned red, but, still he put the salt in his coffee and drank it.

She asked him curiously: ‘why you have this hobby?’ He replied: ‘When I was a little boy, I was living near the sea, I liked playing in the sea, I felt the taste of the sea salty just like the taste of the salty coffee.

Now every time I have the salty coffee, I think of my childhood and my hometown, I miss my hometown so much; I miss my parents who are still living there. Saying that, tears filled his eyes.’

She was deeply touched. That’s his true feeling, from the bottom of his heart. A man who can tell out his homesick, he must be a man who loves his home, cares about home, has responsibility of home..

Then she also started to talk, she talked about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. that was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their story.

They continued to date. She found actually he was a man who meets all her demands: he was tolerant, kind hearted, warm, careful…he was such a good guy but she almost missed him!

Thanks to his salty coffee! Then the story was just like every beautiful love story: the princess married to the prince, then they were living the happy life…And, every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in the coffee, as she knew that’s the way he liked.

After 40 years, he passed away, left her a letter which said:

“My dearest, please forgive me, forgive my whole life lie. This was the only lie I said to you—the salty coffee. Remember the first time we dated ? I was so nervous at that time. Actually I wanted some sugar, but I said salt. It’s hard for me to change so I just went ahead. “

“I never thought that could be the start of our communication! I tried to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was too afraid to do that, as I have promised not to lie to you for anything..Now I’m dying, I am afraid of nothing so I tell you the truth: I don’t like the salty coffee, what a strange bad taste but I had the salty coffee for my whole life since I knew you, never feel sorry for anything I do for you.”

“Having you with me is my biggest happiness for my whole life. If I can live for the second time, I still want to know you and have you as my wife for the whole life , even if I have to drink the salty coffee again.”

Her tears made the letter totally wet. Someday, someone asked her: what’s the taste of salty coffee?

She replied. It’s sweet.

Living a lie..

Is this what life is all about? Her head was spining as she recalled; Life isn’t the same anymore since he stepped into her life. He was the love of her life. Although her positive outlook towards life and cheerful nature won her many friends, she frequently wishes to have a close boyfriend whom she can share her woes and joy. She believed very much in true love and decided to take her time to wait for her right guy to appear. She believed that there would definitely be someone special out there for her, but none came.

Every summer, her close friend would return from Paris to look her up. She was aware that he still held some hope of kindling romance with her. She did not wish to mislead him in any way. So she would always get one of her boy friends to pose as her steady whenever he came back.

For several years she continued to get a different guy to pose as her romantic interest. So whenever he came to visit her, he would be led into believing that nothing could develop between her and the guy.

He, however took all those rather well, often trying to casually tease her about her different boyfriends, or so, as it seemed! In fact, the guy often wept in secret whenever he saw her with another guy, but he was too proud to admit it. Still, every summer, he returned, hoping to re-kindle some form of romance. But each time, he returned to Paris feeling disappointed.

One day he finally decided that he could not play that game any longer. Therefore, he confronted her and professed that after all those years, she was still the only lady that he had ever loved. Although the girl knew of his feelings for her, she was still taken back and have never expected him to react that way. She always thought that he would slowly forget about her over time and come to terms that there is nothing between them. Although she was touched by his undying love for her and wanted so much to accept him, she remembered why she rejected him in the first place-she was not ready. So she hardened her heart and turned him down cruelly. Since then, three years have passed and the guy never return anymore. They never even wrote to each other. The girl went on with her life..... still searching for the one but somehow deep inside her, she missed him.

Summer of 2008, she went to her friend's party alone. "Hey, how come all alone this year? Where are all your boyfriends? What happened to that Paris dude who joins you every summer?", asked one of her friends. She felt warm and comforted by her friend's queries about him, still she just surged on.

Then, she came upon one of her many boy friends whom she once requested to pose as her steady. She wanted so much to ignore him ..... not that she was impolite, but because at that moment, she just didn't feel comfortable with those boy friends anymore. It was almost like she was being judged by them. One guy saw her and shouted across the floor for her. Unable to avoid him, she went up to acknowledge him.

“Hi......how are you? Enjoying the party?" the guy asked.
"Sure.....yeah!", she replied.
He was slightly tipsy..... must be from the whiskey in his hand. He continued,
"Why...? Don't you need someone to pose as your boy friend this year?" Then she answered, "No, there is no need for that anymore......"
Before she can continue, she was interrupted, "Oh yes! Must have found a boyfriend! You haven't been searching for one for the past years, right?" The girl looked up, as if she has struck gold, her face beamed and looked directly at the drunken guy. She replied, "Yes......you are right! I haven't been looking for anyone for the past years."

With that, the girl darted across the floor and out the door, leaving the guy in much bewilderment. She finally realized that she has already found her dream guy, and he was.....the Paris guy all along!

The tipsy guy has said something that awoken her. All along she has found her guy. That was why she did not bother to look further when she realized he was not coming back. It was not any specific guy she was seeking! It was perfection that she wanted, and yes.....perfection!!

Relationship is something both parties should work on. Realizing that she had let away someone so important in her life, she decided to call him immediately. Her whole mind was flooded with fear. She was afraid that he might have found someone new or no longer had the same feelings anymore..... For once, she felt the fear of losing someone.

As it usually is, the line was quite hard to get through, especially an overseas call. She tried again and again, never giving up. Finally, she got through......precisely at 1200 midnight. She confessed her love for him and the guy was moved to tears. It seemed that he never got over her! Even after so long, he was still waiting for her, never giving up.

She was so excited to begin her new chapter, to meet him and begin their lives. She decided to fly to Paris to join him. It was the happiest time of their lives! But their happy time was short-lived. Two days before she was supposed to fly to Paris, she received a call from his brother. He had a head-on car collision with a drunken driver. He passed away after 6 hours in a coma.

She was devastated, as it was a complete loss. Why, did fate play such cruel games with her? She cursed death for taking him away from her, denying even one last look at him! How cruel? She cursed! How she damned the Gods...!! How she hated herself....for taking so long to realize her mistake!! She was living a lie!!! That was in 2009.

The moral of this story is : -
Treasure what you have...
Time is too slow for those who wait;
Too swift for those who fear;
Too long for those who grief;
Too short for those who rejoice;
But for those who love...
Time is Eternity.

All you folks out there with someone special in your heart, cherish that person, cherish every moment that you spend together with that special someone, for in life, anything can happen anytime. You may painfully regret, only to realize that it is too late.

My dreams are infected with you …

It was a bright and sunny afternoon in Mid April by the Kittamaqundi Lake in Columbia; the ducks, Red-necked Grebe, American Bittern and Orange-crowned Warbler were out and about in search of shelter from the hot waves. Self was waiting for his friend and it wasn't long before something caught his eye, or should I say someone!!

Self was waiting for his friend Daniele to arrive; they had planned lunch and movie at the Lake Side Mall. Daniele being a genteel type of girl, her father had instructed her not to drive alone to the mall. Self was waiting to pick her up as the lake was in walking distance to her house.

Ironically Kittamaqundi named after the first Indian settlement in Howard County translates to "meeting place” in the tribe's language. While waiting for Daniele, self could not help notice the new arrival at the lake side. Tall, slim framed with elegance about her, and her eyes, her brownish green eyes staunching as he was hypnotized. She looked directly at self and smiled, feeling the chemistry from across the path, but not understanding what it meant, self looked at the floor and prayed Daniele wouldn't be too long. Within a second of this thought Daniele turned up and off they went on their lunch/movie date. Her eyes speak to the soul and my heart aches for her.

Later that evening as self was helping out at the restaurant that Daniele’s father owned 'she' walked in. Straight up to the counter and asked self for a table. With trembling excitement at heart self felt her penetrating stare as he steered her to a table.

"How many of you?" he asked.

“It will be three of us” she smiled.

As she was about to be seated she turned around and grabbed his wrist and said;

“Can I please get some ice cold water?”

I could swear self felt a small electric shock at touch of her as self just stood there, not knowing what to do, still as a statue, frozen! Luckily Daniele shouted across the room, asking self to help her out at the register, shaken out of the minute silence;

“Certainly Maam.”

Self answered and dutifully went to help Daniele.

Two ladies came over to the register and introduced themselves as Aarthi & Manmeet. They went on to explain that it was their friend Syma’s Birthday and so were wondering if the restaurant lights can be tuned off for a moment to lit candles on the cake that they sneaked in. Syma, what a beautiful name he thought to himself. How old is she, wonders where she lives, as these thoughts cluttered, he said;

“Why of course? Did you guys need a lighter?”

For a moment there self was so caught up in the excitement of knowing her name, he had taken the liberty to make these decisions without consulting Daniele or her father. Thankfully Daniele was right by the side and had heard the conversation;

“Did you guys want us to take a picture for you too?” Daniele jumped in.

“Sure, that will be awesome” the girls replied.

As self left to turn the lights off his heart was racing, having never kissed a girl before he had an odd feeling swell up from inside him, he had to use all his strength to hold back this almighty urge to kiss her right on the lips.

Making it back to the relative safety of the register self began balancing the drawer, this kept him occupied until closing time. As the last customer left and self gave a cheery goodbye, he couldn't help noticing that, Syma, was still seated. She stood up and walked towards the door that he was holding open, as she walked past; self wondered if he would ever see those eyes again? If he would ever get an opportunity to spend time with her? Just then Syma turned around, walked up to him and planted a hard and warm kiss right on his lips. Then she walked away into the night without a word.

Syma the mystery kisser with the hazel eyes left unanswered questions on his lips and now self wanted more. He stood there, for what seemed like an hour, just looking down the path, looking for her, but she was gone and his lips felt good, different, but good.

The beginning..

She heard Haran’s voice calling her, but couldn’t see him. She realized with a jolt of both fear and satisfaction, that she had made it. She’d driven to work despite her condition. The next instant the sensory overload hit her. The noise was overwhelming, as were the smells, and her vision seemed to be impaired because everything seemed brighter, sharper, more detailed – more alive. She could see shimmering shadows and vague auras glimmering around everything. She was staggered to realize that the table she sat in came to her neck, and the burger which she could just a moment ago enjoy, now towered in her throat as a nearly insurmountable obstacle. The perspective of everyday things was suddenly completely skewed and had her staggering. She leaned over getting ready to vomit from the flood of sensory input, when she felt a hand on her back.

“Hey, are you ok Yasmine? I think you need to go home, you look tired!”

Haran seemed giddy with concern; a state Yasmine had never imagined him capable of, while she was still woozy. She looked up at him in order to express her misery, but before she could utter a word their eyes met and she was struck dumb. The perspective was completely different. Whereas before he had been a fiery co worker and Yasmine had seen no gender about him, now he stood taller than her and she could feel the male energy pouring off him. His eyes were a deep and glittering brown iris, his warm dark black hair curled in waves just below the nape of his neck and tucked behind his ears, a wisp dangling over his forehead. His nose and mouth were strong and firm, and the rest of him was slim, lean and muscled in ways she hadn’t seen before. How could she have missed all that? She felt like she’d been struck by lightning. The power of it literally put her to the ground, landing her on her butt with an “oof,” unable to clearly identify this feeling.

She could see he was just as shocked. His brows shot up and his jaw fell open, and he staggered back to lean against the water cooler as if Yasmine was a ghastly plague he needed to escape before he was contaminated. It was at that moment that Tina showed up.

“Hey Haran, how’s the floating around going? Oh, Yasmine! Are you ok!?"

Haran didn’t say a word but took off and disappeared without looking back. Yasmine didn’t think she would ever understand him.

“What was that all about?” Tina asked as she watched him leave.

“I have no idea. One minute I thought I was going to puke and he was standing right next to me, the next minute I looked up at him and he practically ran away like I was the devil himself.”

“Really? That’s not like him. I mean, sure, he can be moody, but he doesn’t panic easily. You just looked at him and he freaked out?”

“Well, I can’t speak for him, but when I looked at him it was like someone hit me with a brick. But my senses are all crazy right now. This whole menstruation thing is a real overload for the senses.”

"So when you looked at each other, it was powerful? It was shocking?”

"Yeah, you could say that.”

“But you don’t feel that looking at me, right?”

“No. But I think I’m starting to adjust.”

“Hmmm. Interesting.” She had an amazed grin on her face.

“What?”

“Nothing. Nevermind. I’m sure it was just the shock to your system from the lack of zinc in your body.” Tina giggled.

“Anyway I think I need to call for your mother to take you home, you should probably get some rest, what is your mother’s cell?”

“What?” Angel looked down and realized she was standing in her puddle of puke. She could feel her blood rush to her head and she imagined her legs floating. No wonder Haran had seemed so concerned. Tina took her hand and helped her sit on the chair while she made the call.

“Lie down and take some rest. I’ll find you a ride home.”

***************
Haran had to get away, he needed to breathe. He couldn’t believe what had just happened. It couldn’t be true. It just couldn’t. He’d been comfortable with Yasmine before, but, today, when she’d looked him in the eyes, he’d gone weak in the knees. Her eyes were the color of sage shot lightly with molten copper. Her hair was black as coal, sexy long and unruly. He could imagine jamming his fingers into it while kissing her. He remembered all the conversations and times spent together at work with her before. It made him feel a sudden urge to hold her close and protect her from the vague unknown. And from Jafar, they were never meant to be together. He also remembered how naked he’d been without her all these while.

“Oh, Mother,” he groaned trying to wipe her image from his mind without much success. He was flying just to fly. He didn’t know where he was going; he just needed to get as far away from her as possible. But no matter how much distance he put between them, he could still feel her. He’d felt the jolt. Felt the shock and felt the way Fate had branded her as his. He had no doubt that it was some huge cosmic joke at his expense, but there it was just the same. He could no more deny it than he could stop breathing. Even now he could feel the connection, as much or more as before. And from the look on her face he could tell she’d felt it too. Little did he know this was just the beginning..

The beginning..
