Good movie, specifically cinematography is not just about ‘eye‑candy’, but about giving substance and meaning to what’s on screen, using technology, skill and artistic expression. It’s not even just about careful framing and high production values: matching up ‘moods’ and ‘feels’ is arguably even more important. And Vishwaroopam is one such movie with outstanding cinematography & audio-graphy brought together in a brilliant way by Dr. Kamal Haasan!

Life of Pi
For those not aware of the story, Life of Pi is about a 13-year old Indian boy, Piscine Molitor Patel aka Pi, from Pondicherry (now Puducherry) who is born a Hindu but is also Muslim and Christian. He believes in God and sees a kind soul in everyone… even wild animals. He loses his family in a ship-wreck and finds himself in a lifeboat with some cargo from his father’s zoo – a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and a tiger (Richard Parker). The rest of the story is about his amazing journey, survival and faith in God.
Life of Pi is full of questions that the movie does not seek to answer. While we might want a filmmaker to plant a flag, point to a path, Ang Lee gets the viewer to do the soul searching. Ravishingly gorgeous visuals are embedded in an electrifying saga that tests human endurance and is anchored in bonding with other forms of life. This bonding that occurs at the level of the soul (Pi believes animals have souls you can connect with), and if one does not believe in soul, than the bonding that occurs through the senses. When Richard Parker walks off unceremoniously into the jungle, towards the end, Pi laments, “All of life is an act of letting go, but what hurts is not taking a moment to say goodbye.”
This is a story about life, in every one of its forms, real and imaginary, and life can hardly ever exist, without the presence of other life. In Pi’s journey, the ocean sparkles. This is a story of transformation where a child becomes a man, first dealing with fear, then thirst, then hunger, threats from a hyena, then a fierce will to survive, loosing his rations in yet another deadly storm, unpredictability of the ocean, his face-off with the tiger and then his acceptance of the companion on board. In the end, he sums it up, “my fear of him kept me alert and tending to his needs gave me purpose”.
Indeed, why must we believe that reality is limited, when we have not experienced all of reality and from all the perspectives? Perhaps the senses are heightened or the reality is different at a certain altitude or in the middle of the night the ocean sparkles with phosphorescence, in an unimaginable way. After all, our experience with life is at such an infinitely small scale anyway.
Michael Danna’s background score is beautiful and reminds you a bit about his earlier Indian outings like Monsoon Wedding and Water. Among the actors, Suraj Sharma as Pi has done a fine job for a debutant and shows great promise as an actor. Tabu as Pi’s mother is as graceful as ever but I wish she had a few more scenes. Like her, other actors including GĂ©rard Depardieu, Adil Hussain, Rafe Spall and Irrfan Khan have small roles but all just right. The real star of the film however is Richard Parker, the computer generated tiger. He is so real, so majestic and so beautiful; like Pi, you develop a bond with him and feel disappointed with his indifference. I absolutely loved the movie and encourage everyone to see it at least once!
American History X
American History X is not just an excellent film because of the cinematic qualities but also because it addresses an extremely important issue in American society: racism. It is so powerful that it can truly change ones’ opinions and beliefs about racism. It is influential and has the potential of changing American society for the better by stopping groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and by instilling a sense of tolerance for other races for anyone who watches the film.

This shall be the start; I had come over all nostalgic and started to create top 50 lists from my formative years. And this song will be one of the 50 songs I am going to post about in the coming days.. into months. I must strongly emphasise that this list in no way reflects any order of my favourite music. In fact, it doesn’t even necessarily reflect any order just a few songs I have come cross over the years– it is merely the music and words that, for some reason, sticks in my mind from my early years. As you know I LOVE music as it it to me the air I breath!

7am Arivu
A R Murugadoss attempts to chronicle the life of Bodhidharma (Surya), a Buddhist Monk from the 5th/6th century, a leading patriarch and transmitter of Zen who hails from Kanchipuram and a Tamilan! Did he succeed? I guess one will have to wait to see the mass medias' reaction before ruling it out. However, IMHO, he didn't fail miserably.7am Arivu starts off like a documentary and ends like one too except everything else in the middle. I am not a fan of A R Murugadoss, in fact, I was furious at him for tying to rip off Memento (Christopher Nolan) in the name of Ghajini failing miserably as he did not even understand the original.
Here, ARM gets inspired by his and many other young and aspiring directors/actors Godfather, Mr. Kamal Haasan. Anyone who has seen Dasavathaaram will be able to see the resemblance. Bio-war, Chasing a Virus, evoking a Hero from the past to save the planet, money hungry Professor and villains interest in the commercial profit of the life demolishing germ compound are all the common elements of the two.

Like Dasavathaaram, 7am Arivu opens in a non-traditional fashion (for Mass South Indian cinema) with a preface that recounts the Pallava dynasty, and the surroundings of Kanchi, to a land that is at the height of both martial and medical prowess. In Dasavathaaram, Kamal draws a parallel between Rangarajan Nambi and Vincent Poovaragan (apart from the more obvious adversarial relation between Govind and Rangarajan), both of whom go down fighting for their principles and what they think is the meaning of their existence. In 7am Arivu, ARM brings together Aravind (Surya), a circus artist and Bodhidharma casing Proprioception Deficit Disorder, also known as Sack's Syndrome which is a complete and total failure of the body’s knowledge of itself. Both the movies tries to breakdown the complex Chaos Theory in a movie form. 7am Arivu would have been a better film if only the screenplay did not abandon the scientific credibility of the subject it took in the beginning towards the fag end to give way to a commercial climax action sequence. Enough said!
Moving on to performance, Surya's (as Bodhidharma and Aravind) performance has made 7am Arivu a successful movie. He has come a long way from his earlier movies and seems to be learning quick and steady. I hope to one day see him reach the acting heights of Kamal, Karthick and Raghuvaran.
Shruthi Haasan may not impress phenomenally with her Tamil debut, but she sure has acting in here genes! And, coincidentally, the film also deals with how abilities are carried forth through generations by genes.
Ravi K Chandran’s cinematography proves that nature is marvelous and mysterious. He proves that in the right kind of eyes/hands, nature presents herself as one of the most fabulous works of art ever wrought. One can see that every frame was carefully constructed, especially in the initial 20 minutes or so. Same can be said about the art too. The visual effects also are a treat to watch, except for a few instances in a fight sequence right in the heart of the city.
Harris Jeyaraj’s tunes may have already delighted you, but do not expect the same with his BGM except a few places. Moreover, the songs are thrust onto the narration.
Overall, if you do not have any expectation for the movie like myself, it will not fail you. However do understand the capacity of the director of the movie!!!
A good watch!

Love-Matrix?
Every direction I turn, I see, faces, all colors and shapes, filled with pain and hope and joy and desperation. And I ask; What can I do? But, listen to the truth, then act. I challenge you to stop making choices based on the experiences of others. Make the choice that is true to you.
Take the initiative to discover the best path for you – even if it isn’t your original plan. While it may seem overwhelming, this is the best time to find what you’re passionate about. Take a chance, and believe in yourself. Your future starts here, jump in.
Towards the end of Matrix Reloaded, the Architect of the Matrix tells to Neo that he is the remaining sum of an unbalance equation. Like a remainder in one of those divisions that is somewhat never-ending e.g 145.66666666 or say (53 divided by 5 = 10.6) The Matrix was design in such a way that there was a need for a remainder only because a perfect sum with a perfect complete and total answer without the remainder would cause a breakdown of the entire system or program. In other words, a flaw was needed for the progression of the system.This particular scene made me wonder; among many things, and because I thought of you today, I can't help but approach this concept of perfect balanced system would be the cause of its breakdown to that of a relationship. Take LOVE in the context of Matrix;
It is all about our choices; Love, among many is funny and relationships funnier. Though many will disagree I believe consistently we tend to fall into relationships that are harmful to us and present a pattern that we know quite well. Disclosure; When I came upon the idea and opened an discussion with a fellow friend I was told that I have a morbid idea of relationships!! So, save your breath and read on if you will and I will tell you how that’s not so true.

So, going back to the Matrix styled approach; If I say that before you begin a relationship you have the choice between a RED PILL and a BLUE PILL you may think I’m crazy. But think deeper ( for those of you who have seen the Matrix)… if we actually and truly had to dissect it; the BLUE pill represent something of a cycle, types of relationships that you are use to, whether it be the traditional chasing someone who looks a particular way; have the same shallow interest as those partners you have chosen before, or just basically you buying into what Pop-culture tell you your love-interest is suppose to be. The RED pill representing something new, enlightening, someone that can help you grow that is not very much part of the pop-cultural fabric or unique enough to be an individual, who has ambition, drive and strives to be a better person.
Most of us, and I have been guilty of this, usually will choose the blue pill to go down that familiar road, knowing full well the chances of its failure based on obvious variables are in the 90 percentile range; still yet we go there. But why? Are we so afraid of the unknown or afraid to deviate from a path that our friends may not readily accept? Do we feel an invisible need or force that puts pressure on us to continually box ourselves within the Love-Matrix? Or instead, are we so guided by the glitz and fluff of the media and celebrity life styles that we trade in our own emotional, love compass for what we think theirs are?
It’s ridiculous enough that relationships in most societies of ours are hard as they are… but its even more ridiculous that some of us get an epiphany which shows us clearly that a particular pattern will not work for us. Yet, we try and try and try futility to make it work only because the knowledge that was produced in our minds by the media, (radio, reality-TV, music videos, magazines, etc) has so etch in our psyche a concept of LOVE and the person who should love, that does not correspond to the actual tenets of traditional love. This throws us into the Matrix cycle which repeats and repeats itself much like the remainder of that equation, until our Trinity or Neo comes to save us…
I think one should always remember that we won't be simply saved unless we at least try to break away from those that influences us to form our relationship and come to terms with the person you want to be with in the long term future. Then only will one be able to choose the best person for him/her now and avoid too many taxing cycles. Strive for a balanced equation, it does not matter if others approve of it; what matters is that the equation works for you and brings a measure of harmony to your life.
And while you do, please don't forget to ENJOY yourself!
Sitting on top!

Update: Home Theater (mini)
It's been over 6 years since I updated my sweet spot (my home theater), and I've been getting anxious to bring it up a notch or two for the past one year. After a month and a half of weekends spent selling old junk on eBay and saving from going out and many other I finally came up with the capital needed for this rather heavy/steep project/hobby/desire.
As you guys know, I am a huge audioholic and the home theater is the centerpiece of any self respecting audioholic, but cashflow issues meant that I had to settle for a HTIB surround sound system... but still it was ONKYO!
Now anyway, at long last, I've picked that ball back up again... and here's the result: My home theater is now fully realized, thanks in part to my eBay sales and that I am taking an advance on (courtesy of my savings account).
Okay! the fun part; here is a little run down on what I used, why I used it, and some of the details that guys who build stuff might dig.
COMPONENTS:
- Panasonic 52" Plasma Display
- Onkyo Ht RC270Audio/Video Receiver
- Polk Audio RM75 series - Central and Surround/Back Speakers
- Definitive Technology Pro Monitor 800- Front Channel Speakers
- Onkyo & Polk Audio - Sub woofers! (yes, I have two)
- Sony BD570 Blu Ray Player
- Sony MDS JE510 Mini-disc Deck
- JVC XU301 MD/CD Combo Deck
- Dish Network (I need my Tamil Channels!!!)
- Self Made Ubuntu Media Center PC
- Xbox360 + Kinect + Michael Jackson Experience (highlight)
My initial idea called for a 65" display, but when I was placing the order I decided on 52" just because I liked the price of it. "three hundred and fifty dollars" ... see, it has a nice ring to it don't you think? Especially for a TV MSRPed @ $1169. I chose Cheetah Mounts from Amazon to mount the display on my wall. It was very easy to assemble and looks like it cost three times what I paid for it. Though you can't see unless you close enough and behind the TV!
Everyone knows sound would play a crucial role in bringing home that movie theater experience, and the Onkyo HT RC270 does the job admirably. See my review here: It features a host of excellent sound and video processing features and was also a steel from Amazon @ $479. Regular price: $689.
The Polk Audio RM75 series ($479) speaker system is the second star of the show and the first obviously is the one and only Definitive Technology, I got the Pro Monitor 800 series. The bass is incredibly stunning and the mids and highs are all very crisp and clear, and Definitive Technology Pro Monitor 800's ($219 x2) direct/reflecting speaker technology combined with my receiver's speaker calibration system have virtually eliminated any sweet spot in my room. You can experience an excellent and well balanced surround effect from just about anywhere in the seating area. I promise!
The sub brothers/woofers ROCK! Especially the Polk Audio PSW10($109). BTW, don’t muddle quality sound with other brands unless you are pairing a very basic setup with the sub woofer that has been directly designed for those speakers.
The Media Center PC providing all the content is an old Inspiron desktop that I'm running the Ubuntu Media Center OS on. It plays DVDs, records TV, plays my 1.3 TB of MP3 collection from my NAS server, displays family photos, Skype chat and surf the web. How cool is that?
Tips for your Home Theater: if you want to ensure the absolute best bang for the buck, let your ears make your audio decisions.
Anbe Sivam again!!
I was watching "Anbe Sivam" last night, WHAT A MOVIE!!! and beautiful concept and thought! If you have not yet watched the movie I say you are missing a lot.. really lot! My one liners about the movie as follows: I exist within me only. Others exist because one imagine others do. Otherwise," other" is not here. No past; No future, only PRESENT! And, there is nothing to give and take in the world. Only to share with the others. All relations, friends, acquaintance and strangers are just a small part of your life. Don't take any talks of culture, religion and civilization sincerely. They are decaying with each moment of time. Death is most lovable part of life. It can come in conscious or unconscious state of mind. Love is is the only truth. So, please, watch the movie at least for this awesome quote by Kamala Hassan in the film; Love would be cherished even if the Taj Mahal were to be ram shackled. Communism is a feeling, which would continue to amaze everyone when the underlying egalitarian thought is provoked in our everyday life moments. It was there and would be there, although an attempt in the Soviet Union has been faltered. There is a difference between validity of the concept and the fallouts in execution. We would be insulting Gandhi if we wore Khadhi, preached indignity of fellow beings, mocked self-respect and humiliated truth.
RELIGULOUS
So, I watched this documentary "RELIGULOUS" (religion+rediculous) about organized religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Mormonism, TV evangelism and even Scientology, with detours into pagan cults and ancient Egypt. Bill Maher, host, writer and debater, believes they are all crazy. He doesn’t get around to Hinduism or Buddhism, but he probably doesn’t approve of them, either. He wants to convince his audience that religion is not only ridiculous, it’s downright dangerous. All of you guys know that I love topics of public manipulation/propaganda and since my childhood I believed that religion is one of the greatest manipulators ever. How did K. Marx say? “Religion is the opium for the folks”, and that is what it is globally seen. Preaching love, it causes wars. Simply because every religion has nothing to do with its founding fathers!Go ahead and watch it you might like and I hope that you will start facing the fact of your blind faith – by seeing such films or by making truly spiritual experiences :)
Corny!!!

Yes, the title of my post really is my plot synopsis for Battle Los Angeles. A movie that is about nothing but aliens killing marines and marines killing aliens for almost two whole hours. There were some twenty minutes of filler before the action scenes started, but none of it added anything to the movie. In fact, if you have already seen the trailer for the movie, then you already know everything that those twenty minutes tell you, which is nothing all that important or relevant to proceedings. Here is an example...my favorite one too; A helicopter will be coming in to rescue them in zero visibility due to the smoke and debris when the soldier throws out a smoke bomb to signal the helicopter where to land!!!! In another scene Michelle Rodriguez asks Aaron Eckhart why he never smiles amidst carnage and death on an unimagined scale!!! I guess the director was sleeping!!!
The entire cast, with the lone exception of Aaron Eckhart's staff-Sargent, are impossible to distinguish from one another. They are just anonymous figures that run through thick clouds of smoke, shout at each other, and shoot at anything that moves and is not human, and there is a lot to shoot at. So there is a lot of shooting, a lot of shouting, and a ton of explosions.
There is just no compelling story.
There is precious little positive that I can say about Battle Los Angeles. The special effects were excellent, but excellent special effects are ubiquitous these days. Even if they were not ubiquitous, movies still need to bring something compelling to the local cinema. Battle Los Angeles brings nothing. Nothing at all. Don't waste your time and money! PLEASE!
Manmadhan Ambu
I watched MMA last night and I must say that it is a must watch in theater at least for the Neela Vaanam song sequence... it is presented in a wind back manner giving a very good feel. The characterization is extremely good (Except the finale 40 minutes). The script is very engaging right from the starting to middle but looses its way towards the end... or rather seemed rushed as in any movie scripted by Kamal Haasan! This smart script is also the negative point of Manmadhan Ambu, well written script may not go well with our masala movie aka "c" class fans, may not go with people expecting a Endhiran, Dasavatharam or Singam, this is different.I like to give kudos to Kamal as it’s hard to make a good comedy movie with a strong story line, though there are few like ‘Sathi Leelavathi’ and this is another one. The script is written in such a way that the movie starts slowly, moves like a romantic movie, pick up pace and shifted to a mere "b" grade comedy movie at the end. The first half is full of comedy and bar sequences involving Madhavan and Sriman is very funny. After a very long time I get to see Madhavan in a stupendous character. He tickles every funny bones now and then at many portions. Trisha dubbing with her own voice and seen without skin shows should be well applauded. Thanks to Kamal Haasan!
Sangeetha proves to be an amazing actress in comedy roles as well. Ramesh Aravind and Oorvasi have acted in Kamal Haasan’s films in comedy oriented characters, but this time they have something different for you. Suriya’s cameo is FUN!Verdict; *** go see it :)
Dream Project :)
Hey! Ram

Where there is happiness, there a myriad lights will shine.
Darkness will not go, light will not come, it will not bring morning…
(just saying) Ram Ram, hey hey Ram Ram, Ram Ram Salaam Hey! Ram Ram
Who knows when Judgment Day may come?
Who knows when you and I may lose our way?
All that is in your power here is to act,
And the consequences of actions no one can avoid.
O Friends, let our religion be humanity! Friends, Let it be humanity!
Learn from what is past, but think of the present and future.
Those who are gone are truly gone, not even their shadows remain.
Today, O People, light the lamp of love, O People, light the lamp of love!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Kamal Hassan

Kamal Haasan, The very name suggests us of novelty and creativity was born on 7th November 1954. The history of Indian cinema has never seen the kind of
Kamal Haasan - a cine lover who's just hasn't had enough of his love.
The range of characters that ‘Kamal’, as he is affectionately called, has enacted over the years spreads to embrace languages other than his mother tongue and here too he has managed to establish himself with convincing authority. Some of his hits in other languages include “Vishuvijayam”, “Rasaleela” “Yeeta” and 'Kanyakumari' in Malayalam, “Swathi Muthiyam” which was a super hit and “Saagara Sangamam” in Telugu. Can one ever forget the songs or scenes from his all time great performance in “Ek Duje Ke Liye” in Hindi? Even to date, the songs from that movie are hummed by people of all ages. We have all heard of the proverb that ‘Action speak louder than words’ and it can be applied to Kamal’s acting career. He lets his movies and character sketches talk for him and the message that comes across is loud and clear – he is one actor whom we can look up to!
