Aalavanthan

Ananthu, was he a born psychopath or a normal child turned into a sociopathic individual? Why and how did his brother turn out differently?

The one line story of Aalavanthan in my terms. Aiming carefully to throw light in to the human aspect of a psychopath and illustrating how psychopaths are made.

Ananthu made- thought that his family legacy was one of negation, the nullification of self. He suffered in his own way turning it outward to negate others as a way to eventually negate himself: Cleary explained by the doctor in the first opening scenes is the key to the movie!

His first (Old guy from the asylum) murder appeared to be without motive. First, one has to understand, Ananthu is a victim of violence/torture and worst, feels powerless to avoid it. Then he is taught by the so-called asylum on how and when to become violent and to profit from it.

"Intelligent," "Alert," "Impressive," "Confidence-inspiring," and "A great success with the ladies": These are the sorts of descriptions repeatedly used by Kamalhassan to describe the life/ dream of psychopath Ananthu. Of course "irresponsible," "self-destructive," and the like also adds credit.

Ananthus' lack of "soul quality" makes him very efficient "machine." Brilliant, able to write scholarly works, imitate the words of emotion, but over time, it becomes clear that his words do not match his actions.

He is the type of person who can claim that he is devastated by grief who then attend a party, Africa Kaatukule "to forget."

Overall I think this is a very genuine effort by the one and only AALAVANTHAN, Padmashri Dr. Kamalhassan in exploring the philosophy of a psychopaths mind set.

Though the movie has brilliant scenes, script, story, music and acting. It is way too quickly executed that it's difficult for a common man, likeable of Ghili to understand.

Plus:
Kamal, remarkable job as the rampant psychopath Ananthu.
Usage of 2 D animation

Cons:
Kamalhassan's lost and confused towards the end screenplay

  1. I feel this movie could have been taken in a more expressible manner so that the viewre's would have accepted the truth rather than turning their faces to the seats.

  2. Kamal neednt have experimented on such a high budget. He is a role model for tamil movies in terms of bringing innovation...By doing an overkill on his experiments he has probably shooed away producers that were willing to invest money for a quality Kamal movie bereft of unwanted gimmmicks....

IMHO, Kamal should stick to his core competency which is ACTING.He can use his literal cinematic talents to provide useful feedback/input to the other technical crew involved in making a movie and not infringe on their creative freedom

  3. I am shattered to know that films of this nature were mega flop...this shows the standard of us, Indians!

"By doing an overkill" I wonder what would you call movies like Hey Ram.

"Kamal should stick to his core competency which is ACTING" I think you are a typical rajini/vijay fan.

    "unwanted gimmmicks" excuse me!?
If you are talking of gimmick as in to deceive, you certainly did not understand the movie or itz message or the post here. For that I should say Kamal had failed. Failed to impress/make understand typical rajinis and vijays.

The most insidious virus in your kind of gents midst, is the term "experiments" used to describe a movie! What a pity :(

Oh BTW, do not mis-understand me as trying to discriminate your opinions, simply MHO!

Why do we all expect a free enterprise economy to underinvest in invention and research (as compared with an ideal. And I wonder why perfect competition might fail to allocate resources optimally in the case of invention.

  5. Ok ok fellas. . . IM*very own*HO Alavanthan does not fullfill an average movie goer's wishes.FYI i'm a 100% Kamal fan!As much i understood the movie , i also could not bare the amateurish foreign actors and even the guy who plays the terrorist himself in starting scenes. The screenplay is also major letdown. If anyone of you guys have seen the movie 12 monkeys, you can see Kamal's gestures which reminds Brad Pitt's . ..no no no not to say that he replayed or imitated but does remind brad Pitt. The way he sniffs and turns his head. And finaly the climax which in like every Kamal's movie, the abominable car chase.Anyway,I gotta run now . .but if you wanna bite me go ahead . . .
